The Lightner Double, Part One STO1

25th of January. Andrew Robson's column in 'The Times' features a six diamond contract, a double squeeze, a two-suit double ruffing squeeze, and the technique known as 'transferring the menace'.

Some of these are beyond the scope of an audio column. What we can cover from the hand is the Lightner Double.

The Lightner Double, Part Two STO2

Selecting the right opening lead is enormously important in defending slams, and the Lightner Double is a useful tool which partner of the defender on lead can employ to suggest a good lead.

In this case, dummy has bid spades during the auction, and defender is sitting over dummy with the ace and queen.

The Lightner Double, Part Three STO3

A different suit, diamonds, has been agreed as trumps, so this defender wants his partner to lead a spade.

So after the opponents have bid their small slam, this defender doubles, not to magnify their score, but to maximise the defence's chances of defeating the contract. What does the double of a slam mean?

Used: 25-JAN-18

The Lightner Double, Part Four STO4

The Lightner Double of a slam requests an unusual opening lead. It says:

"Do not lead a trump."

"Do not lead a suit either of us has bid."

"Do not lead any unbid suit."

Most often it means: "Lead the first side-suit bid by dummy."

Used: 25-JAN-18

The Lightner Double, Part Five STO5

In today's hand, dummy opened one spade, but a responder jump-shift of three diamonds set trumps.

The Lightner Double achieved the opening lead of a spade. With best play, declarer could prevail in any line of play. But the best line was too difficult to find at the table, so the contract went down.

Today's bridge column in The Times STO11

26th of January. Andrew Robson's column in 'The Times' today is chapter 40 of his 'Beginner Corner' series.

To overcall one no trump directly, Andrew says you need 15 to 19 high card points, a balanced shape, and a stopper in the opponent's suit.
